Generative Azulejos

✏️ : Digital tool to generate ceramic squares to valorize Portuguese’s architectural & esthetics heritage
🛠️ : Creative coding, generative design, laser cutting, ceramics

Generative Azulejos is a system inspired by Portuguese ceramic squares, known as Azulejos, and an attempt to fusion traditional and digital techniques. The tiles layouts can be created randomly or based on different characteristics of the façade to tile. Azulejos, as a form of decorative art, are renowned for their incredible diversity of shapes and assembly techniques. I studied the esthetics of azulejos to develop a program to generate new designs and create to map the urban landscape based on the characteristics of the building’s façade and position. For example, a North facing facade will have brighter pattern to enhance light reflection.

From digital design to tangible art pieces

I then exported the generated designs and laser cut them into wood ans plexiglas to create molds. Wood turned out to be the best option. These molds were used for the handmade production of each ceramic piece.
